Resource guide: how to prepare for portrait sessions

Choose your outfit(s) two to seven days prior to the session and try them on. This way you are not scrambling to find an alternate solution if you don’t feel comfortable with your outfit on the day of the shoot. It also allows for time to find clothes that you might have misplaced. This will help you feel less stressed and more at ease the day of the session.

Optional: If it’s a longer session, bring an alternate outfit(s) as a backup or if you just want some options.

Colors:

Solid primary and secondary colors play well in photos. Jewel tones are great.

Colors that match or contrast your eyes are amazing.

Avoid colors that are too close to your hair color or skin tone.

Preferably no bright white. If using a white color, be sure it is a matted white, or closer to a cream color.

Black can work, but use it sparingly unless you’re going for an all black look. If using a black color, make sure it isn’t faded.

LAYERS, TEXTURES, ACCESORIES:

Layers are amazing; jackets, blazers, cardigans, the camera loves them all. Plaid, and textured clothes are great. Solids over patterns can be perfect.

Avoid anything too tight or too baggy. Try not to use shirts that are pilly or wrinkled (unless it’s a material that is meant to be that way), and nothing with stains.

When it comes to accessories, feel free to bring as many as you think you might need, and then some. An accessory can immediately change an outfit in no time, giving your session variety.

Think classics. What will you love in ten years?

PropS:

Props allow a photoshoot to really represent you and your family.

There’s no such thing as bringing too much. We don’t need to use it all, but it’s better to have it and not need it.

We love: books, blankets, balloons, bubbles, signs, flowers. If you are not sure, ask us. We love suggesting ideas. Props aren’t for everyone, but if they are, bring them.

Make-up:

No mineral or shimmery foundations. They’re reflective and look like sweat on camera. Shimmer is fine for eyes or hair.

Bring powder or blotting paper to use just before the session starts and during if need be. Don’t be modest, if you are sweaty go ahead and touch up. This is especially true during the summer months.

Be sure to give special attention to the eyes; darken eyelashes and brows. If you are not used to a lot of makeup that is fine, try a simple black or brown line just above the top of the eyelashes.

If it suits your personality red lipstick is always a classic.

COUPLE OR FAMILY OutfitS:

You want outfits that compliment each other, but don’t match. Unless that’s what you’re going for. Think about it as if you were both/all attending the same event.

 Maternity Outfits:

Keep your outfit simple, allowing for the belly bump to stand out. Try to avoid outfits that are too tight or too baggy. Bold solid colors, neutral colors, or floral prints work really well. Dresses with interesting straps are great.
